Discover the Story of Mundaring Weir Hotel
The historic Mundaring Weir Hotel was built in 1898 to serve the men working on the Mundaring Weir dam and for the many visitors that came up to sightsee at the dam and have picnics in the bush and visit the hotel. They came up via horse and buggy or train. The train line from Perth stopped at Karda Mordo Station at the top of the hotel where both passengers and the beer kegs from the Swan Brewery would disembark. The passengers walked down, and the kegs were rolled down the hill to the hotel! Since then, the hotel has expanded and gone through renovations as a hotel, restaurant, and function space.
It is known for its unique history, with stories of travellers and important political figures staying at the hotel over the years. Tourists and locals visit the Mundaring Weir Hotel today for its breathtaking views, delicious food, and rich history.
1898
where we started
In 1898, the Jacoby brothers built a single storey building called the Reservoir Hotel. The building was situated adjacent to the railway line on the first piece of freehold land next to the weir easement.
1906
Adding to the Story
Fred Jacoby constructed a two-storey building as part of the Hotel and renamed it the Goldfields Weir Hotel. Some of the building materials for the construction of the hotel were brought out to Australia from England by sailing ship.
1942
Going Undercover
During the Second World War The Weir was considered an enemy target and guards were posted. The roof of the Hotel was painted dark and part of the cellar was made into a bomb shelter with access from the ballroom above. The shelter is now the kitchen for the down stairs Café.
Today
A Destination
In the pursuing years the Hotel has been transformed into a wonderful destination for people wanting to get out into the forest without having to travel too far.
